Stephen Colbert to testify at immigration hearing

    Sep 22, 2010

Seriously: Stephen Colbert to testify at immigration hearing

    04:10 PM

Mark your calendar: Truthiness is coming to Congress on Friday. Stephen Colbert is scheduled to testify at a House immigration hearing, the Daily Caller is reporting.

A House Judiciary Committee spokeswoman told the DC the subcommittee hearing — titled "Protecting America's Harvest" — was a "serious issue . . . this is not a TV stunt." A Republican source said the host of Comedy Central's Colbert Report will testify "in character," which has some GOPers worried that he'll make light of a serious issue.

Stephen Colbert make light of a serious subject?

The DC explains the backstory about why Mr. Colbert is going to Washington.

Watch it live Friday, beginning at 9:30 a.m. ET.

This paragraph has been changed on the site and now says:

The DC explains the backstory about why Mr. Colbert is going to Washington: This summer he accepted the United Farm Workers' challenge to "Take Our Jobs," which offers Americans the chance to work in the fields doing the jobs often done by illegal immigrants.

Stephen Colbert to Testify Before House Committee on Immigration

No joke. Stephen Colbert will testify Friday on Capitol Hill at an immigration hearing on the subject of "Protecting America's Harvest."

A Republican source told The Daily Caller that the Comedy Central host will be appearing before a House Judiciary Committee subcommittee "in character," as the pompous, right-wing pundit he portrays on "The Colbert Report."

But a committee spokesperson said the hearing would discuss a "serious issue," and that it "is not a TV stunt."

Also testifying will be United Farm Workers President Artuoro Rodriguez, who appeared earlier this year on Colbert's program to promote the group's "Take Our Jobs" campaign. Rodriguez said Americans who believe farm jobs are being lost to illegal immigrants should apply for the work themselves. Colbert took him up on the offer and worked briefly at a vegetable farm in upstate New York.

Sources told The Daily Caller that the plan for Colbert to testify came out of his experience doing farm work.

Last week Colbert and fellow Comedy Central host Jon Stewart announced they would hold "competing" rallies on the mall in Washington Oct. 30. Colbert's rally will be called "The March to Keep Fear Alive," the goal of which is to combat "creeping reasonableness."
