Ariz. House issues rare defeat to immigration bill
Ariz. House issues rare defeat to immigration bill
Wednesday, February 24, 2010 5:45 pm
The Arizona House has dealt a rare defeat to a bill designed to strengthen illegal-immigration enforcement.
The House voted 30-28 to defeat a bill that would have required the governor to deploy National Guard troops to the border if an immigration state of emergency has been declared.
State law give the governor the option to deploy troops of she has declared a state of emergency. The measure sponsored by Phoenix Republican Rep. Carl Seel would have required such action.
Opponents say that deploying National Guard troops is the governor's choice, not the Legislature's.
