A 50 year old Rio Grande Valley man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for making so called 'straw purchases' of firearms from gun shows in San Antonio and in Austin, 1200 WOAI news reports.

Santiago Munoz would purchase large number of firearms without filling out the proper forms, and without notifying the gun dealers that he was simply a 'straw purchasers' of the weapons.

Munoz was also an illegal immigrant and a convicted felon, which would have made him ineligible to legally purchase guns.

Prosecutors did not say specifically where the weapons Munoz was purchasing were going, but 'stray purchasing' is a major way that weapons from the U.S. get into the hands of the ultra-violent Mexican drug cartels.

Prosecutors did not file charges against the gun dealers or the organizers of the gun shows.
