45 Illegal Immigrants Arrested In Anne Arundel Co.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) ― Police in Anne Arundel County are processing dozens of illegal workers after arresting them as part of a lengthy investigation.

Federal immigration officials arrested 45 illegal immigrants Monday morning who they say worked at the painting company they raided.

County Police Chief James Teare says search warrants were executed at a painting company, which is located near the Annapolis mall.

Officials say the investigation has been going on for a year. At least 50 officers from Anne Arundel County police also raided 16 homes owned by the owner of the business. The owner allowed the illegal immigrants to live in the home.

County Executive John Leopold attended a news conference announcing the bust. Leopold made illegal immigration a big part of his election campaign.

The illegals are being processed at Immigration and Customs Enforcement offices in downtown Baltimore.

Those 16 homes owned by the employer should be confiscated, the business shut down and the owner jailed.

The illegal must be processed and deported. If any of the illegal are re-entrants, JAIL TIME, then deport.

45 Arrested On Immigration Charge In Anne Arundel

    POSTED: 11:30 am EDT June 30, 2008
    UPDATED: 3:25 pm EDT June 30, 2008

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Federal officials arrested 45 people on illegal immigration charges Monday in one of the largest investigations of its kind in Anne Arundel County, police said.

Federal and local authorities executed search warrants at Annapolis Painting Services and 15 residences believed to be owned by the business at about 6 a.m., said Anne Arundel County Police Chief James Teare.

"We believe that they were all associated with this painting company," Teare said outside the business, which is located near a popular shopping mall.

Most of the 45 people are believed to be painters, Teare said. They were in the custody of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

Ernestine Fobbs, a spokeswoman for ICE, did not return repeated calls seeking comment. Agents at the scene directed media inquiries to Fobbs. Investigators could be seen towing vehicles and removing boxes from the business.

About 50 county police worked with 75 ICE officials on the investigation for several months, said Anne Arundel County Executive John Leopold.

Leopold said the arrests should send a strong signal that the hiring of illegal immigrants won't be tolerated in Anne Arundel County.

"This is the most important signal to make that message known," Leopold said.

The business did not immediately return calls or e-mails seeking comment.

The company describes itself on its Web site as "one of the largest painting contractors in the region," which has worked on prominent buildings in the area, including the Maryland State House and facilities at the U.S. Naval Academy.
