    Students banned by birth

    Students banned by birth

For the past several years, many of us Arizona educators have been dedicated to improving the education of English learners.

Some of us believe in an intensive, highly academic approach; others, more instruction in the native language. However, all of us realize nothing is more important to these kids than the possibility that they one day can reach their academic potential at a college or university.

Unfortunately, frustrated with our government's inability to control illegal immigration, Arizonans voted for Proposition 300, a bill that requires Arizona high-school graduates in the country illegally to pay out-of-state tuition at Arizona colleges and universities.

Moreover, the new law prevents these students from taking out college loans. In other words, a fairly significant number of highly qualified students have been banned from college campuses because their parents, desperate for work, came to this country illegally several years ago.

Now, state Treasurer Dean Martin is pursuing an investigation regarding private scholarships at Arizona State University set up for about 200 of these students.

Whereas the proposition was bad enough and contradictive of our efforts to improve student achievement in Arizona, this new action is just plain meanspirited and does nothing for the cause of stopping illegal immigration.

We should urge that Martin stop such nonsense and that ASU publicize how the rest of us of us can contribute to the scholarship fund.

Why should Americans be responsible for providing a college education to the illegals? Not every American citizen who wants to go to college can afford it and a lot of college students today have to hold down a full time job or two jobs just to afford college because there is no money for them to get financial aid. So instead of making college more affordable for our citizens we're supposed to shove them out of schools and put in their places illegals who will then be able to get the financial aid denied to our citizens? No way, they don't belong here anyways and if they want to go to college and are from Mexico they have colleges there. My mom works with a lot of people from Mexico at a local walmart and two of the guys went to a college in mexico just so they could enter the management program at walmart. It's bad enough having to provide them a k-12 education for free now they want college too? When will it stop!
