Air Canada to double flights at Sky Harbor

This fall, Air Canada plans to double its flights between Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Canada, increasing them from two to four.

The carrier will roll out the only non-stop Phoenix-Montreal flight in November and it will operate during the winter and spring tourism seasons. Air Canada will add an additional Phoenix-Toronto flight in October, which will also operate during winter and spring.

Increasing Phoenix's international flights has been a high priority for the city, which runs Sky Harbor. The announcement means that Phoenix now serves 20 cities in Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom.

Sky Harbor has daily international flights to 11 cities. The other cities are served by flights that operate several days a week or on a seasonal basis.

"Air Canada is solidifying its position as the leading carrier from Arizona to Canada by increasing capacity by close to 50 percent in 2011," said Marcel Forget, an Air Canada vice president who handles network planning.

The non-stop Phoenix-Montreal flight will run on Saturdays and Sundays between Nov. 6 and April 30. The Phoenix-Toronto flight will offer daily service between Oct. 1 and April 30. Those dates are the airline's initial commitment for the routes. The company may increase or decrease those offerings later, said Deborah Ostreicher, a deputy aviation director at Sky Harbor.

Air Canada already operates a year-round daily Phoenix-Toronto flight as well as a daily Phoenix-Calgary flight that operates from Oct. 31 to May 28.

Looks like Canada won't be boycotting Arizona.

Canadians come for the winter, stay legally up to six months as tourists, then go back home in the Spring. As legal visitors most probably support SB1070, it will make their stay safer.

A lot of Canadians spend their winters in southern California too, Palm Springs, San Diego, etc.
