Supreme Court may hear Md. immigration case
Supreme Court may hear Md. immigration case
By Associated Press, Updated: Thursday, March 20, 8:15 AM
FREDERICK, Md. — A lawsuit challenging immigration enforcement by the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office is one step away from the U.S. Supreme Court.
The Frederick News-Post (http://bit.ly/1kLOD8u ) reports that the high court will consider on Friday whether to hear the case of Salvadoran immigrant Roxana Santos.
Santos contends deputies illegally discriminated in 2008 when they arrested her on a civil immigration warrant in Frederick. She says they detained her and checked her immigration status only because she looks Hispanic.
The county says Santos raised suspicion by trying to hide as the deputies drove past her outdoor lunch spot. The county argues that prohibiting police from making immigration arrests on civil warrants would weaken counterterrorism efforts.
The court could announce as soon as Monday whether it will hear the case.
