U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said today that the man suspected of wounding an Adams County Sheriff's deputy Saturday night is in the country illegally, 9News reported today.
Twenty-five-year-old Sergio Estrada-Gomez is facing charges of attempted second-degree murder of a public official and first-degree aggravated assault of a police officer.
Estrada-Gomez, who has been arrested on domestic violence and traffic charges in Denver and Adams County, was deported to Mexico in 2007, but returned illegally, according to ICE.
The arrest affidavit obtained by Channel 9 states Estrada-Gomez is suspected of shooting Deputy Alexander Kondos three times: once in his left ankle, once in his right thigh and once in his chest. The bullet that hit Kondos's chest struck a bulletproof vest.
Kondos was treated and released from Denver Health Medical Center after the shooting just before 11 p.m., when he and a partner were on foot patrol in the apartment complex in the 1700 block of Coronado Parkway in unincorporated Adams County.
The affidavit states Estrada-Gomez was involved in a fight with other people in the apartment complex before the shooting.

This would not surprise me one bit. There are alot of illegals that are arrested for illegally possessing firearms as well as aggrevated assault with a deadly weapon. I seen it in the immigration holds in Broward County and Collier County.

Investigators arrest suspect in deputy shooting
written by: Jeffrey Wolf written by Dan Weaver 12 hrs ago
ADAMS COUNTY - The Adams County Sheriff's Office has arrested a man suspected of shooting and wounding a deputy late Saturday night.
Twenty-five-year-old Sergio Estrada-Gomez is facing charges of attempted second-degree murder of a public official and first-degree aggravated assault of a police officer.
The arrest affidavit of Estrada-Gomez says Adams County Sheriff Deputy Alexander Kondos was shot three times on Saturday night: once in his left ankle, once in his right thigh and once in his chest. The bullet that hit Kondos's chest struck his bulletproof vest and did not cause an injury.
Kondos was treated for his gunshot wounds at Denver Health Medical Center early Sunday morning and released.
The shooting happened just before 11 p.m. on Saturday at an apartment complex in the 1700 block of Coronado Parkway in unincorporated Adams County.
Sheriff's deputies regularly conduct foot patrols of The Village at Coronado apartment complex because the sheriff's office is targeting crime in the area.
Sgt. Candi Baker says there is gang activity in this part of Adams County.
"This is one particular area that we do see some crime activity, and that's one reason why the deputies were out there on foot and trying to be more present, trying to be more fully involved with the community," Baker said.
The sheriff's office says deputies heard a disturbance in an outdoor, common area of the complex late Saturday night and went to investigate.
Several shots were fired at the deputies as they approached the area, according to authorities.
The deputies did not return fire, according to authorities, because there were a lot of people in the area running from the gunfire.
The arrest affidavit says witnesses told police the incident started as a large fight at the apartment complex involving dozens of people.
The affidavit also says that Estrada-Gomez admitted to police that he was involved in the fight, but he said he ran away from the area and was in his mother's apartment when he heard the gunfire. Estrada-Gomez denied having a gun or shooting at the deputies.
ICE says Estrada-Gomez was deported to Mexico in 2007. He was not allowed to return, and if he is released from custody he will be deported again.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Adams County Sheriff's Office at 720-322-1313.
