Suspect in hit-and-run turns himself in to police

SAN DIEGO: A 31-year-old man turned himself in to police yesterday morning in connection with a hit-and-run accident Monday that gravely injured a pedestrian in City Heights, San Diego police said.

The driver, Alfredo Cruz, went to the Mid-City police station about 9 a.m. His car had been found six hours earlier by a police officer who had spent the night looking for it, traffic Detective Dan Wall said. Cruz does not have a valid driver's license and is in the country illegally, Wall said.

About 9:15 p.m. Monday, a 66-year-old man was walking in a marked crosswalk at Fairmount and Myrtle avenues when he was struck by a Honda heading south on Fairmount, police said.

Witnesses told police they saw the car hit the man in the intersection and watched as the driver pulled to the side of the road, opened his door and looked at the injured pedestrian. The man then noticed the bystanders watching him and drove away, Wall said.
