Suspected Illegal Immigrant Talks About Arrests
    LAST UPDATE: 5/20/2006 5:54:41 AM

    Video

For the first time, we're hearing from the suspected illegal workers taken into custody by Butler County Sheriff's deputies.

A caller to 911 said there was a fight brewing between immigrant workers and American workers.

Local 12 Reporter Shawn Ley has been sorting through the conflicting stories.

Rogelio Lopez is one of 18 workers detained Thursday by Butler County Sheriff's deputies.

Lopez is from San Luis, Mexico and admits he didn't have a legal work visa when he crossed the border in Lorado, Texas three weeks ago. Within days, an employer hired him at about $8 an hour to lay brick at new homes on Wayne Township's Windy Meadow Drive.

"We don't know what happened," said Lopez. "We were working normal. All of a sudden we saw police."

Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones tells Local 12, seven cruisers, lights on, sirens blaring, were sent to the work site after receiving this 911 call from a man named Joe Payne.

    Dispatcher: "What's going on there?"

Caller: "There's about 20, 30 Mexicans and five or six Americans, and we're about ready to have a fight because uh, they're all illegal aliens out here, and we're Americans, and they're out here taking our jobs."

"We were very surprised, because we hadn't seen anybody," said Lopez.

Lopez and the rest of the workers maintain there was no fight, no argument, and they didn't see any American workers onsite.

The sheriff says, as in any case, the men were detained until they could be identified, and until investigators simply found out what happened.

By law, deputies can't make arrests for immigration violations, but investigators can report the men and their employer to immigration officials.

These men are skilled laborers. They say it's worth illegally crossing the border, starting at $8 an hour for a job that pays $5 a day in Mexico.

"Maybe the American's don't like us, because they think we are here to take away their jobs," said Lopez.

Local 12 spoke with the man who called 911 for help. He says a fight never broke out, and he's more upset with his employer, he accuses of hiring illegal workers.

He is a 30 year Journeyman brick layer, starting at least at $25 an hour, not the $8 paid to the immigrants.

    Subcontractors Out Of A Job

    LAST UPDATE: 5/21/2006 9:59:36 AM

They say they were only trying to prevent trouble-, now they find themselves out of a job.

A worker at a home construction site in Butler County's Wayne Township called the sheriff's department to say trouble was brewing between his work crew and a group of hispanic workers earlier this week.

Once deputies arrived, they detained the 18 hispanics who admitted to being in this country illegally. T They were later released.

Local 12 Reporter Larry Davis tells us how the incident has left the one construction crew looking for work.

Aaron payne and his brother Joe gathered up their scaffolding and braces and moved on Saturday.

    Aaron is a masonry subcontractor.

He says he and his five employees were fired by the builder of this home for making the call to deputies. That call led to the detainment of these workers who admitted to being illegal immigrants. On top of being fired, Payne says they aren't being paid for the work they've done.

"We do good work as much as they do and here I am leaving and their stuff is still down on the house." said Aaron Payne.

As for why Payne and his crew were fired, Local 12 was unsuccessful in trying to reach the owner of MKJAS Properties in person and on the telephone Saturday.

Aaron Payne says he's not racist and has nothing against hispanic workers, as long as they're in the country legally.

"If you've got a green card and you're legal, I've got no problem with it." added Payne.

Stay with Local 12 for any new developments in current illegal immigrant raids, and their impact on the tri-state. We'll continue to follow the story and bring you any new information as it happens.

The general ontractor has just impulsively made a move that will result in a federal court case that will send their assets down the tubes. As long as America's legitimate subcontractors are prepared for being met with this sort of retalation the road has been shown to a new tactic. Call the illegal job sites in as an impending brawl.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

Once deputies arrived, they detained the 18 hispanics who admitted to being in this country illegally. They were later released.

So even though they admitted they were here illegally they were let go, we are still doing the catch and release thing. No ICE no nothing. What is this crap.

And yes I do believe there will be violence on these worksites between american workers and illegal aliens as they are fed up with their jobs being taken by illegal workers who work for much less.

    I find this confusing.

That particular Sheriff made a public announcement that he was going after the Employers who hire Illegals.

I check his website every so often.
