(CBS) NORTH MIAMI BEACH A day on the water turns into the smuggler's blues for one boater off Haulover Beach.

Lt. Neal Cuevas from the North Miami Police Department say one of the marine patrol boats pulled alongside a fishing boat offshore to perform a routine check Tuesday morning.

As the officer inspected the boat he noticed the boat's captain and a passenger were acting a bit nervous and they explained that they were out doing a little fishing. The North Miami marine patrol officer found more than fish, however, when he searched the boat's cuddy cabin. Inside there were eleven migrants of Asian descent and one person from Guayana.

The officer escorted the boat and its occupants back to the dock and found another person on the dock that could be part of the group. Immediately the officer called for back up from the Indian Creek Police and Border Patrol.

Police believe the vessel was returning from the Bahamas and could be part of a smuggling operation.

The 14 people are being investigated by border patrol in Pembroke Pines.
