A pursuit in Temecula Tuesday, Jan. 27 came to an end at about 3:30 p.m. after the suspects crashed their vehicle and all four men took off on foot, according to the California Highway Patrol.

"US Border patrol passed on information to CHP dispatch regarding a failure to yield vehicle," CHP Officer Mike Lassig told Valley News. "One of our officers observed the vehicle on the northbound 15 near the checkpoint."

According to Lassig, the CHP officer followed and monitored the vehicle at a distance without using lights or sirens.

"The suspect vehicle took off at a high rate of speed," Lassig said. "The officer followed the vehicle where they exited at Winchester Road and turned right going eastbound."

The suspect vehicle, a 2001 Mercury Mountaineer SUV, continued all the way down to Murrieta Hot Springs and turned right, according to Lassig.

During the pursuit, the suspects crashed into two vehicles and kept going, but no one was injured, according Lassig.

"We were driving eastbound on Murrieta Hot Springs around 3 p.m," Shawn Onye, 47, of Temecula said. "I was in the right lane on a two lane road and the Mountaineer literally came out of nowhere driving about 80 mph. He came between me and the vehicle
in the left lane and sideswiped my vehicle which had me, my husband, and my 1 year old in it."

Their left side mirror was torn off and damage as well to the left front quarter panel, according to Onye.

According to Lassig, the suspects took Murrieta Hot Springs all the way to Butterfield Stage Road and they went southbound.

The suspects then crashed for a third time just north of Rancho California Road on Butterfield Stage Road where they took off on foot, according to Lassig.

"That is where we saw the Mountaineer vehicle abandoned with several other witnesses and damaged cars along the side of the road," Onye said. "The mountaineer had a broken axel and all occupants fled the scene."

CHP and the Temecula Police Department set up a perimeter to catch the four suspects who fled from the vehicle, according to Lassig.

"After the four suspects took foot bail ... the suspects went into backyards," Lassig said. "All four occupants were eventually located and arrested at about 3:30 p.m."

According to Lassig, US Border Patrol arrived on scene and took all four suspects into custody and it is not known why the men were wanted by the US Border Patrol.
