Prosecutor believes brothers charged in stabbing have likely fled to Mexico

It’s been just over a year since Ricardo Galeana Mora was fatally stabbed on the doorstep of his Kulshan Creek apartment in Mount Vernon.

His body was ultimately returned to his family in Mexico. And that’s where prosecutors think they also may find his killers.

Mora was attacked on Nov. 2 of last year. He was stabbed twice in the chest and died about 45 minutes later at Skagit Valley Hospital.

The slaying stunned the heavily Latino neighborhood and left some residents with a continuing sense of unease as the suspects remain at large.

Police named a pair of suspects shortly after Mora died. Two brothers were charged with the crime the following day, but they had already eluded police.

Since then, the crime “kind of went away, said Max Moreno, a leasing agent at Cascade West Apartments, which operates several large apartment buildings in the neighborhood. Moreno said he and others there have spoken with police about the status of the investigation.

“They just said there’s nothing going on, Moreno said. “It hasn’t been resolved.
