November 20, 2015 – ICE, CBP issue warning ahead of shopping season
Officials from ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) are advising shoppers this holiday season to be aware of online scams that would have consumers purchase counterfeit goods instead of genuine products. Full Story
November 17, 2015 – ICE HSI partners with Ball State University and the David Owsley Museum of Art to recover a hidden idol stolen from India
Under the auspices of Operation Hidden Idols, special agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations’ (HSI) cultural property unit were able to determine that this idol had been looted from a temple in Southern India and brought to the United States illegally. HSI formally took custody of the artifact, which is linked to the ongoing investigation. For the past five months, officials at the museum worked hand in hand with HSI to identify the stolen piece. November 13, 2015 – UK resident connected to Syrian export scheme extradited to US to face federal charges
A dual citizen of the United Kingdom and Syria was extradited from the U.K. Thursday and was arraigned today for his alleged part in a conspiracy to illegally export laboratory equipment, including chemical warfare agent detection equipment, from the United States to Syria. The charges and extradition follow an extensive international probe led by ICE’s HSI. Full Story
November 18, 2015 – Kansas man sentenced to 150 months for distributing child pornography
A central Kansas man, who used the screen name “kansas_dad” in chat rooms, was sentenced Wednesday to 150 months in federal prison for distributing child pornography. Full Story
November 13, 2015 – North Texas federal jury convicts 2 brothers in visa fraud case
Following a six-day trial before U.S. District Judge Barbara M. G. Lynn, a federal jury convicted two brothers of felony visa fraud based on their conspiracy to secure a low-cost workforce at their North Texas information technology consulting company from about March 2005 to February 2011. ICE HSI investigation leads to arrest of 8 in US, Mexico for human trafficking
Over a two-day period, authorities arrested five defendants in Mexico and two in Queens, New York, as part of a coordinated bilateral law enforcement action. The defendants are Jovan Rendon-Reyes; Saul Rendon-Reyes; Guillermina Rendon-Reyes; Francisco Rendon-Reyes; Jose Rendon-Garcia; Felix Rojas; Odilon Martinez-Rojas; and Severiano Martinez-Rojas.

ICE removes Salvadoran man wanted for murder
Carlos Alejandro Hernandez, 23, was encountered July 11 by U.S. Customs and Border Protection near Rio Grande Valley, Texas, after he illegally crossed the border into the United States. On Oct. 5 an immigration judge ordered him removed from the United States.

Nigerian woman sentenced in Wisconsin to 10 years for bilking her victims out of more than $2.3 million in Internet-dating fraud scheme
Sally Iriri, 33, a Nigerian national who was living in Chicago, was sentenced Nov. 20 by U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson, Western District of Wisconsin, for wire fraud. Iriri’s co-defendant, Michael Adegoke, 33, also a Nigerian national, was arrested in Atlanta Nov. 3.

Texas man sentenced in New Mexico to 10 years for child exploitation
Juan Hernandez, 46, of El Paso, Texas, was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison, to be followed by 15 years of supervised release. He must also register as a sex offender when he completes his prison sentence.

Kansas man sentenced to 150 months for distributing child pornography
Tucker J. Newman, 48, of Topeka, Kan., pleaded guilty to one count of distributing child pornography. In his plea he admitted he sent child pornography to an undercover investigator in California.

Operator of music piracy website sentenced to 3 years in prison
Rocky P. Ouprasith, 23, was also sentenced to two years of supervised release, and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $45,288.62, and forfeit $50,851.05. He is the first cyberlocker operator in the U.S. to receive a criminal copyright infringement sentence.

Derrick Hargrove, 35, from Houston, was sentenced to 180 months imprisonment for trafficking 4.99 kilograms of methamphetamine. His sentence will be followed by five years of supervised release.

Southwest Texas man sentenced to 3 years in prison possessing crack cocaine
Shane Lucas Winn, 34, was sentenced to 36 months in federal prison to be followed by three years of supervised release. In handing down the sentence, the court noted the sincerity of the defendant in wanting to turn his life around for his kids. Winn had noted that he did not want his children to grow up without a father like him and make the same bad choices as he had done. Winn pleaded guilty Aug. 31.

Franklin County man sentenced to 15 years for human trafficking
Tremayne Rontae Kirby, 25, pleaded guilty in August to one count of human trafficking and one count of using interstate commerce to promote an enterprise involving prostitution. Kirby must also pay $11,000 in restitution to an individual listed as “Victim One” in the indictment.

Daniel L. Bonnett, 40, of Sacramento, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge John A. Mendez. According to court documents, between Jan. 27, 2013, and Feb. 14, 2013, Bonnett sent and received images depicting the sexual exploitation of children over peer-to-peer file sharing networks and by using other Internet applications.

2 El Salvadoran men arrested in New Mexico on federal drug trafficking charges
Jose Remberto Guzman-Dominguez, 33, and Miguel Angel Rodriguez-Flores, 47, were arrested Nov. 14 on a criminal complaint by HSI special agents after officers of the New Mexico Motor Transportation Police allegedly found about 124 pounds of cocaine in their tractor-trailer.

DEA Announces "360 Strategy" to Address Heroin, Prescription Drugs and Violent Crime

The United States Drug Enforcement Administration today announced Pittsburgh as the pilot city for a comprehensive law enforcement and prevention "360 Strategy" to help cities dealing with a heroin and prescription drug abuse epidemic, and its associated violent crime. DEA Special Agent in Charge for the Philadelphia Division, Gary Tuggle made the announcement along with United States Attorney David J. Hickton of the Western District of Pennsylvania and several local and federal agencies and organizations working in the fields of law enforcement, pharmacology and substance abuse prevention and treatment.
