Talk-Show Hosts Fall Like Flies in SF, Except Dr. Michael Savage

First it was leftist nut case and alleged child pornographer Bernie Ward whose microphone was silenced by the broadcast moguls at KGO-AM in San Francisco.

Ward, a hopeless food addict and unrepentant liberal, was unceremoniously dumped from his late night talk show and from "God Talk," his 50,000-watt, Sunday morning blasphemy, after word of his indictment on child pornography charges was made public.

Since then, Ward has shown his true colors by violating the terms of his bail and by lying to federal authorities about his whereabouts.

Ever the street hustler, Ward is reportedly working on his next radio gig, a dilly to be called "Cell Talk," which would be broadcast directly from Ward's jail cell when the exact location and term of said incarceration site is known. Listeners must be 18 and over to tune-in to the blustery priest and indicted bad guy.

Just down the hall from KGO-AM is the conservative sister station, identified by the call letters KSFO, featuring the irrepressible Lee Rogers and, until yesterday, the effervescent and lovely Melanie Morgan.

Unlike Bernie Ward, Ms. Morgan does not have morals issues that preclude her employment in the ultra-high profile world of network radio.

Rather, Ms. Morgan, who was instrumental in the recall of California Governor Gray Davis and who has been indefatigable in her support for U.S. troops and in her opposition to those who fail to appropriately honor America's young men and women in harm's way, was the victim of the budget ax at KSFO.

Her contract was not renewed, a real blow to Bay Area conservatives who have counted on Morgan for inspiration and a rare pro-conservative voice in the liberal capitol of Hades, otherwise known as San Francisco.

In the case of Ward, his removal should be celebrated as a positive step, sure to clean the airwaves of lies, garbage and filth.

In the case of Melanie Morgan, Bay Area conservatives will be justified in lamenting the tragic loss of a much-needed voice of reason and sanity. She will be sorely missed.

Meanwhile, apparently oblivious to any and all of the pressures that befall fellow broadcasters in the Bay Area, Dr. Michael Savage continues unabated in his daily effort to spread truth and light throughout the God-forsaken Bay Area.

Despite concentrated attacks from CAIR, illegal alien advocates, and other anti-American terrorist groups, Savage continues to dominate in his time slot and demographic niche.

The good Doctor turns 66 years of age on March 31, but continues to outsmart, out hustle, and out perform all other talk-show hosts.

Thank God for the resilience and clarity of Dr. Michael Savage!

Melanie Morgan - the conservative San Francisco talk show host who helped start the recall of Gov. Gray Davis and called for the execution of New York Times editor Bill Keller - has been let go by KSFO-AM.

Morgan, 51, the daughter of an ACLU attorney in Missouri, and a mainstream TV and radio reporter in the Bay Area before becoming a conservative pundit, has achieved national name recognition - both laudatory and dubious - for her activist crusades and incendiary comments.

But at 9:05 a.m. Monday, after completing the highly rated morning talk show she co-hosts with Lee Rodgers, she was summoned to the office of KSFO program director Ken Berry. He told her that her contract would not be renewed when it expires March 31. She has worked at KSFO for 14 years and at sister station KGO radio and other affiliated stations for 12 years before that.

"Hey, I didn't lose a child, I didn't lose a leg, I just lost a job," Morgan said Tuesday. "I was told it was not part of my job performance, but part of an economic implosion in the industry." Already, she said, she has received five other job offers, but prefers to stay in the Bay Area until her son, a junior in high school, graduates.

Berry confirmed that Morgan's departure had nothing to do with her performance or the station's ratings - KSFO has consistently been among the most highly rated talk stations, even in the liberal area. (Ninety percent of its listeners live outside San Francisco.) The home page of KSFO.com's Web site directs readers to Morgan's personal Web site, www.melaniemorgan.com, where she will continue to offer commentary as well as on www.worldnetdaily.com.

She has orchestrated goodwill trips to U.S. troops in the Middle East and has led protests against anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan in Texas and elsewhere. But her commentary is what has endeared her to conservatives - and enraged liberals.

Several times, MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann bestowed her with his nightly "Worst Person in the World" citation - most notably for saying that Keller should be tried and convicted of treason for stories published in the New York Times about the Bush administration's monitoring of international bank transfers to track terrorist financing. "I would have no problem with him being sent to the gas chamber," Morgan told The Chronicle. She once said about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, "We've got a bull's-eye painted on her big, laughing eyes."

Morgan said she had no regrets about the Keller comments ("I'd say them again - in fact I have"), but said she wished she "had been more articulate" when talking about Pelosi. "In print, it doesn't translate to what I was intending to say," Morgan said, clarifying that she was speaking in political terms.

Morgan will continue to be a driving force for Move America Forward, a nonprofit she co-founded to support the work of U.S. service personnel and to occasionally poke at the Bush administration for not being conservative enough.

Last month, the group was at the forefront of the battle over a U.S. Marine Corps recruiting center in Berkeley. The organization is running nationwide TV ads asking for an apology to service personnel from the City Council for comments members made during the dispute.

"Melanie was an activist as well as an on-the-air personality and we liked that," Berry said. "Certainly, she was controversial. But we don't shy away from that here."

Instead, Morgan's departure has more to do with the financial problems of KSFO's corporate parent, Citadel Broadcasting Corp., which purchased ABC Radio stations from the Walt Disney Corp. last year. Citadel shares have lost 87 percent of their value over the past year. Last month, Citadel reported a fourth-quarter net loss of $848 million.

"Obviously, we're facing a downturn in the business and we're trying to please the stockholders and the investors, " Berry said. He declined to say if other cuts would follow.

Berry said Morgan's spot on the morning program will be filled. "But it won't be with someone the stature of Melanie," Berry said.
