CONGRESSMAN SAYS BUSH ABANDONED LAW ENFORCEMENT WHEN THEY NEEDED HELP MOST

(WASHINGTON, DC) -- Representative Tom Tancredo (R-CO) today called the late night assault on Ignacio Ramos an atrocity for which the Bush Administration bears full responsibility. The incident occurred on Saturday while the former border patrol agent sat in the Yazoo Federal Prison in Mississippi for shooting a known drug dealer from Mexico.

"Not only did the administration choose the side of a foreign dope runner over the agents who stopped him from smuggling a load of drugs into the country – now they've failed to protect that agent while his case is on appeal," said Tancredo, who spoke with several of Ramos' family members late Monday night about the clash. "If the administrations goal was to deliver a one-two knockout punch to border patrol morale, they certainly succeeded."

The Ramos family was unaware of the situation until late Monday, when family members were finally able to contact Ignacio to wish him well on his 38th birthday. Ramos told family members that he was attacked by five men who beat him severely for being a former man of the law. One of the assailants has been identified by Ramos and is now being charged with assault.

Tancredo concluded, "The administration has for too long turned their back on law enforcement and left them to fend for themselves. These men have been the victims of what the Bush Administration's border enforcement policy has always been. Mr. President pardon these men now."
