Taneytown council to vote on 'sanctuary city' status

The Taneytown City Council is expected to vote tonight on a resolution declaring that the community is not a "sanctuary city" for illegal immigrants.

Council members took comments from residents at a packed meeting last week. Opponents argue the resolution would send the wrong message about the city, but supporters say it's important for the city to take a stand because the federal government won't.

Communities that designate themselves "sanctuary cities" bar local police from cooperating with federal immigration officials in their efforts to track people who are in the country illegally.
