IMPD Makes $1 Million Heroin Bust on East Side

What began as a traffic stop on Indy's east side Thursday afternoon resulted in a California man being arrested for possession of $1 million worth of heroin.

According to IMPD Sgt. Matt Mount, IMPD Sgt. Paul McDonald observed pickup truck traveling eastbound on I-70 at Post Road at an excessive speed and tail-gaiting.

McDonald pulled the vehicle over and identified the driver as Jaime Carrillo, a 59 year old male from Burbank, CA.

During the traffic stop, Carrillo stated he was traveling from Burbank to Columbus, OH, and had stopped for a couple of days in Dallas, TX. The more Carrillo talked, the more nervous he began acting.

McDonald checked for border crossings and found that both Carrillo and his vehicle had entered Brownsville, TX from Mexico. Carrillo steadfastly denied he had been in Mexico.

Carrillo was asked if he would give permission to McDonald to search his vehicle, explaining that he didn’t have to. Carrillo consented.

Upon an inspection of the undercarriage of the truck, Sgt. McDonald noticed a newer welding on the drive shaft. When tapped, it made a thud sound as opposed to a hollow sound. A narcotics dog was brought to the scene and it gave a positive indication on the undercarriage.

Carrillo was then asked for permission to have his truck taken to the city garage to have it checked out, to which he agreed.

Upon inspection at the garage, approximately 7 kilos of a substance, believed to be heroin, was found in the driveshaft. The value of that much heroin is approximately $1,050,000.00.

Carrillo did admit to having come from Mexico and was delivering the truck to somebody in Columbus, OH.

Carrillo was arrested for Possession of Narcotic, a Class C Felony, and Dealing in Narcotic, a Class A Felony.
