    Teach kids to avoid molesters

Several recent attempted child abductions and molestations in the region should alert the public to take steps to protect children and report any suspicious activity immediately, police said this week.

Monday's brazen daylight attempted abduction of a young girl in El Paso and Tuesday's alleged molestation in a fast-food restaurant in Las Cruces "should be a concern for the community," said Armando Nava Jr., chief of the El Paso Independent School District police.

Experts said that rather than panic, parents and other caretakers can do various things to keep children safe from sex predators.

"As far as I know, the little girl (in Monday's attack) is OK physically and emotionally," said Nava, who was a supervisor in the 2001 Alexandra Flores case when he worked for the El Paso Police Department's homicide division. "This incident reminded me immediately about Alexandra Flores case. I was very concerned and sad that this happened."

Alexandra, a 5-year-old girl who was abducted from the Wal-Mart Supercenter in the Lower Valley, was found slain the next day. A registered sex offender was charged and convicted in her death. He received the death penalty.

Las Cruces police Officer Carlos Wooten said authorities continue to seek information about anyone who was the McDonald's at 2495 N. Main between noon and 5 p.m. Tuesday. He said a preteen allegedly was molested in the play area of the restaurant.

In November, the Las Cruces Crime Stoppers sought the public's help in the attempted abduction of a teenage girl who was approached by a man driving an SUV.

Wednesday, Juárez police detained two men who allegedly tried to abduct two girls, ages 10 and 12, by threatening them with a knife. The girls got away, and police found the suspects right away.

El Paso psychologist Guido Barrientos said he is not surprised by the wave of attacks on children. He also said he believes pornography is a factor.

Thursday, U.S. federal authorities announced the arrest of a 23-year-old El Paso man who was indicted on several counts related to Internet children pornography.

"Times have changed radically from the old days, when such incidents were rare," Barrientos said. "Today, very explicit sexual material involving children is widely available on the Internet. The climate of arousal and sexual stimulation is much higher than it was 20 years ago. Men who are aroused by this material start looking for prey to satisfy their desires."

"This is a form of terrorism on our children, and we need to review the safety of our children," he added.

El Paso police Sgt. Warren Olsen of the Crimes Against Children Unit, said parents can have their children's fingerprints taken through the city police or the sheriff's department. "Parents should also have a recent picture of their child, and the child's fingerprints," he said.

Nava and Olsen strongly advise parents to teach children not to accept rides from strangers and to have a backup plan for picking up their children from school when parents can't.

"Parents ought to get involved, and walk their kids to school, and not let them walk alone," Nava said. "There were some concerned parents at a PTA meeting in Northeast El Paso (Wednesday night), but we told them that their kids are safe at school. The campuses are still the safest place for them."

Police in the school district are making sure they are visible at and around the campuses. "We are also working closely with the (city) police, and we notified the school principals about Monday's incident," Nava said.

Olsen said that until the girl's attacker in El Paso is caught, "the community should be vigilant." "Teach children important telephone numbers, including 911, and to go to safe place to get away from someone who approaches them in this manner. They can go to a convenience store, for example."

Next week, the El Paso City Council will consider proposals to prohibit sex offenders from living within 25 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border, and prohibit sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of places children gather, such as schools or day- care centers.

Unlike jurisdictions in the United States, Mexico does not have a sex offender data base, and does not check anyone who cross the border into Mexico for previous sex convictions or other offenses.

What if we didn't allow these deviants here in the first place, right Senator Cornyn?
How dare you disrespect a United States Senator! These are just poor immigrants who need jobs that Americans won't do! You know what? You are mean spirited!
That's right. Yeah, the illegals take jobs that most Americans won't do, like:
    Homicide
    Rape
    Child Endangerment
    Sexual Assualt
    Larceny
    Home Invasion
    Kidnapping
    Forgery
    Vehicular Homicide
and the list goes on and on.

What part of "We don't owe our jobs to India" are you unable to understand, Senator?
