KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- When Kansas City Mayor Mark Funkhouser appointed Frances Semler to the Parks Board, it created a firestorm of debate.
The end result could be the loss of a huge convention - and millions of dollars - for the city.
A decision is expected on Saturday from La Raza's headquarters in Washington, D.C. saying whether or not they will pull their convention from KCMO.
Dozens of people lined the street near the J.C. Nichols Fountain on Saturday morning to show their support for La Raza, immigrants and civil rights. At the same time, they put pressure on the mayor's office.
"Our mayor has drawn a line in the sand. La Raza is an organization that stands up for the civil rights of all people. La Raza doesn't mean 'the race.' It's an organization for the people," Angela Ferguson, immigration attorney, said.
Ferguson is a passionate civil rights activist who wants Semler off the Parks Board because of her affiliation with the Minutemen.
"What the Minutemen do, and what they preach and teach, and what they spread is the fear of foreigners. And it's not people that have their green card, it's people with darker skin than they have," Ferguson said.
Semler maintained that she's not against the Latino community, but she opposes illegal immigration. She also said she won't resign from her post on the board.
The local debate caught the eyes of La Raza, who scheduled their 2009 national convention in Kansas City.
The controversy came to a head on Friday, when a federal mediator came to try and work out a compromise. Neither side publicly expressed a willingness to give in.
With or without La Raza, some say Kansas City's reputation has taken a hit.
Mayor Funkhouser said he will not comment on the situation until La Raza makes their decision.

What about the civil rights of the 200+ million LEGAL citizens and LEGAL residents of this country who are NOT part of 'THE RACE'? What about their civil rights? You know those quirky little things like not getting raped, robbed, molested, assaulted, carjacked or murdered by the masses of illegal members of 'THE RACE'. I kind of think that not getting raped, robbed, molested, assaulted, carjacked or murdered by illegal invaders is a civil right for LEGAL citizens of this country. Or maybe these so-called civil rights only apply to illegals nowadays. Brutal rights violations and vicious crimes like calling an illegal alien an illegal alien. Oh, the humanity.[b][i][size=117]"Leave like beaten rats. You old white people. It is your duty to die. Through love of having children, we are going to take over.â€
