Judge halts action on Arizona immigration case

PHOENIX — A federal judge considering a challenge to Arizona’s immigration enforcement law says she will formally put the brakes on most action in that case until a higher court decides an appeal by Gov. Jan Brewer.
Action in the case slowed substantially in U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton’s court after she put key parts of the law on hold in July.
Bolton said at a hearing Friday that she will formally freeze most of the action in that case until the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decides Brewer’s appeal of the July ruling.
But Bolton will allow lawyers to continue litigating a counter-lawsuit that Brewer filed against the federal government as part of that case.
Brewer sued the federal government for allegedly failing to secure the border.
