Huh? I read this a couple of times. Don't see where detaining illegal aliens is being removed as a function because of a name change. The reorg is under criminal and civil. Detention is in there.

Now, not accepting illegals just because AZ identified them is putting pollitics over the law and is disgusting. The Administration has no right to change the law by fiat!

I think that Debbie Schlussel is wrong and that the statement in relation to ICE rejecting detainees is also wrong. You are right in saying that the Morton letter does not claim what Schlussel says that it does.

Furthermore the problem between Arizona and ICE is that if detainees increase now because of the new laws it would require an increase in ICE detention space for ICE to accept the detainees. According to another post from Arizona regarding Arpaio that was on earlier this morning the low level detainees could be retained by the County for thirty days and released. After a few illegals being picked up and held for thirty days more than once the word would get out among the illegals that being in Arizona would unwise. The ICE would not need to accept more than the current turn over but there would be a larger number in temporary State and County detention and rising paranoia among the illegal aliens in state.
