Texans slip border fence amendment in immigration bill
Associated Press - May 23, 2007 7:35 PM ET
WASHINGTON (AP) - An amendment slipped into the US Senate immigration bill would give Texans and state officials more say on where border fencing is erected.
The amendment is back by Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn.
It would require the Department of Homeland Security to take into consideration fence location concerns raised by states, local governments and property owners.
The larger immigration overhaul bill is still being debated and won't come up for a vote until June.
Some South Texas property owners and community leaders have complained they want more input on where fencing with Mexico would be place.
Critics say a fence -- meant to stem illegal immigration and other crimes -- would hurt relations with Mexico, could damage wildlife and affect the South Texas economy.
The Homeland Security Department has said -- no site plans are final yet.

Perhaps our government should use some of those tax dollars of ours that they are continuously flushing on pet projects to purchase all the farm and ranch property along the border. If the government was to own the land, no one could say a damn thing about building a fence on it. If that won't work, start using our eminent domain laws to acquire the land for the good of the public. I don't normally support taking land through eminent domain, but darn, we're in the middle of a national crisis!"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing" ** Edmund Burke**
