CORPUS CHRISTI —Border Patrol agents in South Texas reported seizing more than four tons of marijuana during several discoveries during the weekend, including a large bust by Falfurrias agents.

The largest seizure came Saturday near Roma. Agents found upon an abandoned SUV packed to the ceiling with bundles of marijuana, with a combined weight of nearly 1,900 pounds.

The same day, agents at a Falfurrias checkpoint stopped a tractor-trailer for inspection after a drug-sniffing dog alerted agents to the presence of possible contraband.

Upon further inspection, agents found 1,700 pounds of marijuana hidden inside the trailer's cargo area, according to a news release.
Additional seizures at Border Patrol checkpoints raised the amount of marijuana seized to nearly 8,000 pounds, federal officials said.

The street value of the combined drugs is estimated at nearly $6.4 million.

NM border agents seize 700 pounds of pot

    Updated 4:13 p.m., Monday, October 29, 2012

SANTA TERESA, N.M. (AP) — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers turned up more than 700 pounds of marijuana during a weekend stop at the Santa Teresa port of entry.

Officers found the 10 bales of tightly packed marijuana in metal boxes hidden under the bed of a Ford pickup truck that was crossing from Mexico on Saturday.

The driver, 55-year-old Jose Manuel Gomez Serrano, a legal resident of Portland, Ore., was turned over to immigration agents and arrested on federal smuggling charges.

Officers at the port had become suspicious and selected the man's truck for a secondary inspection. An X-ray turned up anomalies in the appearance of the bed of the truck.

Port Director Joanne Thale-Lembo says the sophisticated method of concealing the drugs shows the extent to which smugglers will go to bring contraband into the U.S.
