Perry: Abolish sanctuary cities, protect property rights
By Mike Ward | Tuesday, January 11, 2011, 12:20 PM

Gov. Rick Perry has just designated two issues as emergencies for the Legislature: Abolishing sanctuary cities in Texas and protecting private property rights in eminent domain cases.

That means that legislation on those two issues can start moving immediately through the hearing process for passage early in the session, a fast track for issues that Perry thinks are important.

Designation of the private property rights issues, a big one with conservatives, did not surprise senators as much as the sanctuary city one, a big conservative issue but not one that most expected would make the fast-track list.

i hope this pasts but im not going to hold my breath.
    for two reasons.

    1. the house speaker from the last session is again speaker. and two eyars ago he promised the Dems he would not allow anything to do with illegal immigration come to the floor for a full vote.

    2. the comment i posted about months ago from solomon ortiz, jr who said that with 1/3 the legislature being hispanic they will make sure nothing comes out of committee

    Thanks

Thanks for the welcome folks. I've been a lurker but a supporter for a while. I live in Austin which is a sanctuary city and I plan on doing my part to see some work get done downtown at the capitol in the future. I hate that the link is from the Amaerican Statesman as they are about the most liberal rag around...but I wanted to find a source quickly after I saw the Governor announce the news live on TV today.

Perry gives emergency status to sanctuary city bill

AUSTIN – Only minutes after being sworn in on the opening day of the 82nd session of the Texas Legislature, lawmakers heard Gov. Rick Perry give emergency status to legislation ending so-called sanctuary cities for undocumented immigrants in Texas.

That is just one of the big issues that drew crowds so big State Fire Marshall's Office made sure the crowds remained safe as hundreds of Texans clamored to get a spot in the House viewing gallery.

The line to get in stretched from the door of the House, down two flights of stairs, and in to a hallway.

One conservative protester, who would not give his name, was wearing the state flag of Arizona. He believes Texas should follow that state's lead on dealing with illegal immigration.

“I owe my children every ounce of struggle I can to make their home secure, safe, honorable and living under this Constitution,â€

Texas Gov. Perry Moves to Ban 'Sanctuary Cities,' Protect Private Property

Mark Whittington – Tue Jan 11, 5:27 pm ET

The Texas State Legislature, while struggling to close a $15 billion dollar budget deficit without raising taxes, will also deal with the issues of sanctuary cities and protecting private property from being seized under eminent domain.

According to the Austin American Statesman, Gov. Rick Perry has declared the two issues as "emergencies" so they can move through the legislature on a fast track.

The policy of police departments in certain cities to not inquire as to the immigration status of people who are arrested for other crimes or otherwise come in contact with the police has been termed by opponents of the policy "sanctuary cities" as it protects illegal immigrants from local police inquiries.

Proponents maintain this allows illegal immigrants to give information to the police without fear of being deported. Proponents also maintain it is not the job of the local police to enforce federal immigration laws.

Opponents counter that the policy of "sanctuary cities" constitutes a de facto amnesty for an entire class of criminals. Regardless of the intentions of illegal immigrant to make better lives for themselves by living and working in the U.S., they have violated the law by entering the country illegally.

Sanctuary Cities and States Information Resource suggests that the following Texas communities are sanctuary cities: Austin, Baytown, Brownsville, Channelview, Denton, Dallas, El Cenizo, Fort Worth, Houston, Katy, Laredo, League City, McAllen, Port Arthur and San Antonio.

Lawmakers React Quickly, Predictably, to Perry

    by Julian Aguilar
    January 11, 2011

It didn’t take long for Hispanic Democrats to pounce on Gov. Rick Perry for calling on the Texas Legislature to fast-track immigration-related legislation today. Perry designated abolishing sanctuary cities, the common term for municipalities whose police officers do not enforce federal immigration laws or refer persons suspected of being in the country illegally to federal authorities, as an emergency item during the 82nd Texas Legislature that began today. Eminent domain legislation is also on the list, which means the issues can be addressed during the first 30 days of the session.

“Governor Rick Perry has decided to gloss over the real challenges at hand and instead focus on proving up his Anti-Federal Government bona fides,â€
