Washington, April 8 .- Activists in Washington and neighboring states of Maryland and Virginia will join the demonstrations of May 1 next several cities in United States by an immigration reform.

"We are working together to get out into the streets and send a clear message for a reform that benefits the community," said Gustavo Torres, chair of the Coalition of Immigrants in the National Capital and director of the Casa de Maryland.

"To rebuild our economy, we must reconstruct our immigration system. Assimilation million undocumented immigrants will bring stability to hundreds of communities and make them more competitive and productive," said the activist.

In a press conference, Torres revealed that he hopes the president Barack Obama delivers a speech in May in favor of reform and pointed to the bipartisan efforts in both houses of Congress to debate a bill in September.

Community leader acknowledged that in previous years, a greater lobbying in Congress and emphasized that this time there is a more favorable policy environment and greater efforts with legislators and the White House.

Also, the coalition presented a report to journalists of "non-negotiable principles" for immigration reform, including legalization of the undocumented, a moratorium on the raids, the integration of immigrants and family reunification.

Their position paper proposes the elimination of electronic verification of employment, creation of an "Ombudsman" in the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and rates more fair in Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS), among other measures .

The report, endorsed by 33 organizations and developed by the firm Mate Group, was based on focus groups in Maryland, Virginia, Arizona, California and New York in which about 350 immigrants, mostly Latinos and Africans.

The march will begin from May 1 in Malcolm X Park in Northwest Washington, will travel across the 16th Street and ends at the White House.

"President Obama, tell us," said co-chair of the coalition, Jessica Alvarez, who recalled the 2006 mass demonstrations against actions in Congress seeking to criminalize undocumented immigrants.

Ricardo Juarez of Mexicans Without Borders group, said that under the Obama administration "nothing has changed" regarding the administration of George W. Bush, because they have been suspended following the raids and cooperation between local police and immigration agents.

The organizers of the march showed that use the popular Internet social networks for greater involvement this May 1, with young people that promote the legalization of undocumented students under the bill "Dream."
