Border Patrol Agent Shoots Suspected Immigrant
Wednesday, July 1, 2009 1:25 PM
McALLEN, Texas -- A Border Patrol agent in Texas has shot a suspected illegal immigrant after a scuffle in a convenience store.
Authorities did not immediately make clear whether the man was armed.
Border Patrol spokesman John Lopez said the agent chased the man into a store in McAllen on Wednesday morning after a group of men ran from a vehicle the agent was pursuing.
Lopez said the immigrant fought the agent's attempts to detain him inside the store and the agent "found it necessary to shoot to stop the altercation."
The man was taken to a hospital for treatment of a gunshot in the abdomen. His condition was not immediately known.
The agent was unharmed. His identity was not released.
