NC - UNC Protest (Against Tom Tancredo) Gets Rowdy
UNC Protest Gets Rowdy
By Tim NelsonCHAPEL HILL (WTVD) -- There are two questions following a rowdy student protest at UNC Chapel Hill Tuesday night.
Did the protest get out of line and did campus police go too far?
Dozens of protesters turned out to oppose a speech given by a former Colorado congressman, who was on campus to speak against illegal immigration.
Tom Tancredo didn't make it through his talk. In fact, he left campus early after protesters interrupted his speech and broke a window.
Protesters who weren't allowed into the room where the speech was being given gathered outside the door and chanted, "There's no debate, no space for hate."
In video from Tuesday night's incident, things clearly grow more tense with campus police. There is pushing and shoving on both sides.
One officer is seen on video shaking pepper spray, which was used.
Some protesters coughed and covered their mouths after it was sprayed.
In another video clip placed on You Tube, police can be seen shooting their tasers in the air. No protesters were tased and reportedly, no one was arrested.
Other video shows what was happening inside the classroom with Tancredo. The former congressman once ran for president on a platform firmly against illegal immigration. He was invited to UNC to deliver a speech opposing in-state tuition benefits to illegal immigrants.
Protesters interrupted his speech, stretching out a banner in front of him that read, "No one is illegal." Tancredo grabbed the banner and confronted one of the people holding it.
Then there was the sound of glass shattering. A window was broken by more opponents outside. As the situation escalated, Tancredo left.
Those who went to hear him speak were clearly upset. ""Obviously there wasn't a point," one attendee said. "He wasn't going to be allowed to speak."
UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp responded to Tuesday night's events and said, "We're very sorry that former Congressman Tancredo wasn't able to speak. We pride ourselves on being a place where all points of view can be expressed and heard, so I'm disappointed that didn't happen tonight. I think our public safety officer appropriately handled a difficult situation."

I watched W's video before bed last night and all I can say is how shocked and let down I am about this. Things are quickly slipping out of control and from the comments left at this story NO ONE is ok with this! Can you imagine what it's going to be like when Oblabbler and the commicrats try to pass amnesty?? If this is a precurser to that, then we have some very dark days ahead.
From what I've seen last night and this morning, I am more determined than ever that my kids will NOT be attending a secular college-maybe not any college if things keep escalating like this. It's going to be trade schools for my kids. From what I've seen, all college campuses do is crank out little libs who are totally clueless. I guess this is who will be running the country some day and thats beyond sad.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

I read the comments to this story also and out of 82 comments only ONE was for the hatefilled protestors.
Most viewed their actions as a wakeup call for citizens to take action against those who would try to stop our freedom of speech.
They may have stopped Tancredo's speech but in doing so they did more for our cause then Tom's speech would have done."A Government big enough to give you everything you want,is strong enough to take everything you have"* Thomas Jefferson

Ex-congressman stunned by UNC protest
Tancredo protest

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Campus police used pepper spray on student protesters angry over immigration issues who disrupted a Tuesday night speech by former Republican presidential candidate Tom Tancredo at the University of North Carolina.
Hundreds of protesters denouncing Tancredo's tough stances against illegal immigration gathered at Bingham Hall, shouting profanities at the former Colorado congressman, who tried to speak about his opposition to in-state tuition for unauthorized immigrants.
He left after a protester broke a window and police shut down the event. He had been invited by a student group that opposes mass immigration and multiculturalism.
"This is probably the worst I've experienced on a college campus," Tancredo told WRAL News on Wednesday.
His speeches on immigration routinely generate protests, he said, but they're usually silent protests by students holding banners.
"Kids are kids. They get emotional. They get crazy. But that doesn't mean they can start throwing rocks and bricks and start breaking windows," he said. "I don't remember a campus where we could never even get a speech going."
Officers ejected two women who delayed the speech by holding a 12-foot banner across the classroom where Tancredo was to speak. It read, "No dialogue with hate." Tancredo tried to pull the banner away, saying, "You don't want to hear what I have to say because you don't agree with me."
Police spokesman Randy Young said pepper spray was "broadcast" to clear the area as the women were escorted outside. An officer also fired a stun gun, but it wasn't aimed at anyone, he said.
Young said the use of force was being investigated by the department.
Tancredo said after officers escorted him out of the room that he had never been silenced by protesters.
"This is the free speech crowd, right?" Tancredo joked at one point as protesters screamed at him.
Before the speech ended, some in the audience of 150 urged the students to let Tancredo speak.
"We are the children of immigrants, and this concerns us," said junior Lizette Lopez, 22, vice president of the Carolina Hispanic Association. "So we would at least like to hear what he has to say if you want to hear what we have to say."
Tancredo told WRAL News that he blamed UNC faculty members and other adults in the room for encouraging the protesters instead of trying to calm the situation.
"That was discouraging to see at a major college campus," he said. "You might see it at some podunk place, but you wouldn't have thought it would be at the University of North Carolina."
Chancellor Holden Thorp issued a statement that he was sorry Tancredo wasn't able to speak.
"We pride ourselves on being a place where all points of view can be expressed and heard, so I'm disappointed that didn't happen," Thorp said. "I think our Public Safety officers appropriately handled a difficult situation.â€
