Ontario's new high-tech licence introduced
By THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO — Ontario has come up with a new high-tech driver’s licence designed to combat identity theft that could eventually make it easier to cross the Canada-U.S. border.

Transportation Minister Jim Bradley announced the new higher-security IDs at a news conference today.

Bradley says the province is working toward eventually encrypting citizenship data into the licence so it can be used like a passport to enter the United States.

Some of the new security features include a second photo on the front of the card and raised lettering of the licence’s number, signature and date of birth.

Bradley says the new cards are much more difficult to tamper with or counterfeit.

The card conforms with new standards developed by the American Association of Motor Transport Administrators.
