SAN YSIDRO, Calif. -- A Tijuana police officer was arrested by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers Tuesday night, on suspicion of attempting to smuggle $50,000 worth of cocaine across the border, officials said.

The 35-year-old unidentified Mexican cop was taken into custody at 7:45 p.m. at the San Ysidro port of entry. Customs officials said members of the Anti-Terrorism Contraband Enforcement Team were suspicious after searching the man's 2000 Volkswagen Jetta.

Customs officials said the driver resisted as they tried to handcuff him, then attempted to flee into Mexico. He was eventually restrained.
During a secondary inspection, officers said they found a non-factory compartment behind the car's rear seat backrest. Inside, officials said they found two cellophane wrapped packages, weighing 5 pounds, that tested positive for cocaine.

The man was arrested and is being held on a charge in connection with the alleged smuggling attempt.
