SAN DIEGO -- Like the weeds, the trash in one Tijuana neighborhood seems to grow wild.

You can find an old case of beer, a tire, and a printer. Items such as these found a home in the U.S., which has in turn become a dumping ground for neighborhood residents.

Jorge Perez said many people, himself included, dump their trash into the U.S. in Otay Mesa.

“We have no alternative,” said Perez.

Some people burn their trash, but otherwise they said there is not much they can do.

“What am I going to do, leave it behind my bedroom?” said Perez.

Perez said trash pick up in his neighborhood is spotty, but it’s blocks away on a hilltop.

“The streets here do not work. Trash trucks can’t get down here,” added Perez.

10News has learned about an agreement between Mexico and the U.S. to allow Mexican trash collectors to come into the country and take the trash back.

Perez said it is supposed to happen every six months, but it’s been a while since he has seen anyone collect trash.

“Trash is not only on that side of the fence. There is trash on the Mexican side, too,” said Perez.

It is a situation many are not happy with.

10News attempted to contact the city of Tijuana to find out when it might send crews to clean up the trash, but efforts were unsuccessful.
