TIJUANA — A 17-year-old boy has confessed to killing a popular San Diego language instructor stabbed to death in December inside his apartment in Tijuana’s RÃ*o Zone, Baja California authorities said Wednesday.

The victim, Henry Abalayan Acejo, 45, was in the apartment with the teenager and two other guests when the crime occurred, investigators said. It was a crime of passion, said Baja California Attorney General Rommel Moreno Manjarrez, but he declined to publicly discuss the details.

The two other guests were in a different part of the apartment when the crime occurred but were key to helping investigators solve the case.

The youth will be tried in Baja California’s juvenile justice system, Moreno said. He was taken into custody on Tuesday.

Acejo, who was born in the Philippines, taught Tagalog at Southwestern College and at San Diego State University, as well as English as a second language at those two colleges and at the San Diego Community College District’s Mid-City campus.
