Tillis says Hagan failed on immigration

Republican Thom Tillis says Democratic U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan has failed on immigration despite promising a tough stance in her campaign four years ago.

His campaign on Thursday pointed to a press statement Hagan's campaign made in 2008 blasting then-GOP Sen. Elizabeth Dole, and the Bush Adminstration, for neglecting the border.

The Tillis campaign said she has backed President Obama's immigration policies and voted against more fencing along the border three times since 2009.

"Our national crisis at the border has only gotten worse since Kay Hagan and President Obama have been in Washington," said Tillis spokeswoman Meghan Burris. "While it's nice to hear Hagan's sudden concern in the form of election-year rhetoric, the simple fact is that she repeatedly voted against securing the border, and even voted to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants. Unlike Senator Hagan, Thom Tillis will oppose amnesty and work hard to secure our border."

Hagan voted for a plan that adds more security. Tillis opposed the plan because it offers amnesty to those who are in the country already.

"Kay supported a bipartisan plan that passed the Senate that would add 20,000 more border security agents and added 700 miles of fence, but Speaker Tillis opposed that bill because he would rather play politics than work on serious solutions to secure our border," said Hagan spokesman Chris Hayden.

The bill would also require immigrants to learn English and pass a criminal background check and pay back taxes and a fine before being considered for citizenship at the back of the line.

Tillis campaign did not immediately respond to a question about what plan he supports in place of the plan Hagan backs.

The 2008 Hagan press release says she opposed amnesty back then.

Here's the Hagan press release provided by the Tillis campaign:

Hagan Campaign: Dole "Late to the Game"

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Six years after assuming a new position in her career in Washington, Elizabeth Dole has enabled the Bush Administration to neglect securing our borders. Since 2000, 5 million people have crossed our border illegally, nothing has been done to crack down on employers who knowingly hire illegal workers, and the economy is in crisis.

"This is an economic and national security crisis that has only gotten worse since Senator Dole has been in Washington," Hagan Communications Director Colleen Flanagan said. "Working on a daily basis to address the challenges North Carolina faces, Kay Hagan has seen the ways it's crippling our economy and putting a tremendous strain on local law enforcement. So while it's nice to see her election-year attention, the simple fact is that she's a little late to the game."

Since President Bush took office, 5 million illegal immigrants have crossed the border. Enforcement by the federal government has fallen 25%. Our border remains porous and Washington has done nothing.

Several newspapers have editorialized on Elizabeth Dole's involvement in the immigration debate, saying she did not show necessary leadership on immigration and noting she voted to continue the immigration problem "so she can use it in her re-election campaign."

"In Washington's finest tradition, Senator Dole is simply trying to take a political vulnerability off the table," Flanagan said. "No one in North Carolina believes that since Elizabeth Dole was elected, enough has been done to tighten the borders, turn off the jobs magnet luring illegal workers here, or increase enforcement of the laws on the books by getting tough on employers who knowingly hire illegal workers. What Senator Dole is campaigning on amounts to a band-aid solution to a massive federal problem of her own creation."

    […]

Like Senator Dole, Kay Hagan opposes amnesty in any form. She also believes Washington must take immediate steps to secure the border, enforce the rule of law and crack down on employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants, things Elizabeth Dole has refused to do.

At least Hagan voted against the DREAM Act in 2010. Tillis as Speaker of the NC House tried to weaken E-Verify but our governor vetoed it. Can't remember if the General Assembly overrode that veto.

BTW, Tillis is a RINO of the highest degree, a cog in the crony GOP power brokers' machine backed by Karl Rove and his money PAC. Arrogant beyond words.
