Tjuana.- An anonymous tip led state agents to a van in Mexicali loaded with more than 1,600 pounds of marijuana worth an estimated $2.4 million, authorities announced Thursday night.

Police agents also detained nine people who were allegedly guarding the drug at a car wash, according to a release from the state police agency.

A caller to the anonymous crime tip line 089 on Wednesday at around 7 p.m. warned that various people were apparently loading drugs onto a van in a neighborhood called Santa Clara de Mexicali.

State police agents mounted an operation and confronted a man armed with a rifle who was guarding a white van. They searched the vehicle and found 71 packets of marijuana, weighing a total of 1,630 pounds, worth an estimated $2.4 million.

The release identified the detained as Carlos Fava Corella, 47; VÃ*ctor Daniel Campos Ruiz, 32; Juan Manuel González Cisneros, 39; Arturo Hernández Carrasco, 53; Armando González Cisneros, 38; Alejandro Lora Yucupicio, 37; Leobardo Pedroza Navarro, 44; Carlos Enrique GarcÃ*a Marrón, 22; and Verónica Fava, de 44.
