Tipp woman abducted; Medway man jailed

    Staff Writer

A Medway man charged with kidnapping and beating a Tipp City woman Thursday was arrested by Tipp City police officers after he returned to the area for what he thought was gas money.

Juan Carlos Zaragoza, 32, an undocumented worker, allegedly went to the home of his ex-girlfriend on the 700 block of Barbara Drive in Tipp, grabbed her by the hair and dragged her to his vehicle, held her against her will and beat her, according to Sgt. Jeff Burris.

Burris said police received a call at about 5 p.m. Thursday from the woman's sister who reported Zaragoza had kidnapped the woman and was possibly taking her to Medway.

Burris said Zaragoza came back to Tipp City approximately two hours later and dropped off the woman at the Speedway gas station on West Main Street. The woman was able to get a ride back to her residence from a friend who was at the gas station and she called police.

The woman later received a call from Zaragoza and told him she would give him gas money if he came back to her residence.

"He was apologetic at that point about what had happened," Burris said.

When Zaragoza arrivesd, police were on the scene.

Once police were able to stop Zaragoza, he was uncooperative and his refusal to remove his right hand from behind his back resulted in an officer using a stun gun to subdue him.

"When he did get out of the vehicle, he wouldn't take his right hand from behind his back even though the officer told him too," Burris said. "He kept coming toward the officer and they told him to get on the ground and he wouldn't. Once he got about seven feet away he was tased."

Burris said Zaragoza had nothing in his hand, but the police did have information that Zaragoza frequently carries a knife or firearm.

Zaragoza was taken to Upper Valley Medical Center for an abrasion on his forehead he sustained after hitting the ground when he was subdued. He was later taken to the Miami County Jail and incarcerated.

Zaragoza was arraigned Dec. 7 in the Miami County Municipal Court on felony charges of kidnapping, felonious assault, assault and obstructing justice, as well as four misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, open container and no operator's license. His bail was set at $250,000.

Tipp City, OH. - A Medway man is behind bars after kidnapping and attacking his ex-girlfriend. Once police had him cornered, they had to taser him. But, the fight wasn't over.

Police say 32-year-old Juan Carlos Zaragoza is an illegal immigrant from Mexico with a violent past. They say he shoved his ex in a car, and drove around Tipp City, drunk, while he assaulted her.

During the kidnaping, police say he stopped at a gas station on West Main Street, where he was caught on surveillance cameras.

It was there that the victim saw a friend she knew, and managed to escape her attacker.

Police said she thought Zaragoza was going to kill her, but she stayed calm and collected, and managed to get away.

Officer Nick Ceech of The Tipp City Police Department said, "She tried to be calm and compliant, did not agitate him, especially while they were driving around. She did everything she could to get through the situation safely."

Zaragoza came back to the victims home, and thats where police arrested him.

Police say during the arrest, he charged at an officer, and had to be tased. He also headbutted an EMT worker, while receiving treatment.

Zaragoza is facing numerous charges, from kidnapping to felonious assault and others. He remains in The Miami County Jail.
