U.S. District Judge Pamela Reeves on March 7 sentenced former Lenoir City resident Ludwin Leonel Monterroso-Lemus, aka Ludwid Lemus, to serve two years in prison after being found guilty for unlawful re-entry and possession of a firearm.

Documents from U.S. District Court show Monterroso-Lemus, 31, was deported from Hidalgo, Texas, to Guatemala in May 2010 by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Monterroso-Lemus was able to re-enter the country illegally and was arrested in June in Lenoir City.

Monterroso-Lemus in October pleaded guilty to illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition, along with illegally re-entering the United States after being deported.

“This case emphasizes the commitment of the U.S. Attorney’s Office to enforcing immigration laws and reducing violent crime, two top priorities of the Department of Justice and Attorney General Jeff Sessions,” J. Douglas Overbey, U.S. attorney, said in a release from the Department of Justice.

Monterroso-Lemus was arrested June 24, 2017, after Lenoir City Police Officer Michael Arden responded to a call off East Broadway to locate a male suspected of firing a gun toward a residence off West Broadway. After locating Monterroso-Lemus in the back of the residence, Arden noticed a 9mm shell casing in the driver’s seat of Monterroso-Lemus’ vehicle.

Monterroso-Lemus admitted to driving in an alleyway and firing one shot into the ground toward the residence before driving away, according to the report.

“Monterroso also gave the location of the pistol and a Hi-Point 9mm handgun was located within reach of where he was seated upon officer encounter,” Arden wrote in the report. “There were three Hispanic males seated on the tailgate of a truck at 407 West Broadway and in close proximity to where the bullet impacted.”

The three males claimed they feared for their life after they saw Monterroso-Lemus fire the gun, according to Arden’s report.

Lenoir City Police Department and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations were involved in the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Bart Slabbekorn represented the U.S. during court proceedings.
