Nashville mayor vetoes measure making English official language

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Mayor Bill Purcell vetoed a measure making English the official language of Nashville, saying it was unconstitutional and unnecessary.

"This ordinance does not reflect who we are in Nashville," Purcell said at a news conference Monday shortly after issuing his veto.

The measure passed 23-14 last week by the Metro Council required all government communications to be in English, except when multilingual communications are required by federal rules or are needed "to protect or promote public health, safety or welfare."

Opponents and supports of the proposed ordinance agreed it was largely a symbolic slap at illegal immigration that had no significant effect except for public relations. The council's vote garnered widespread media attention last week.

Purcell said his legal staff had advised him the bill violated the U.S. and state constitutions and would cost hundreds of dollars to defend "for no good reason."

Purcell's veto seems likely to stand. It will take 27 council votes to override it.

Well, I know he is going to get ripped BIG time on local talk radio tomorrow!!! He had the big wigs from the Chamber standing with him, including the president of the Black Chamber of Commerce. TJ Graham, local black radio host, is going to give them hell tomorrow. The black population of our community was TOTALLY supportive and showed up in numbers at the council meeting. A lot of effort has gone into this, just to have this idiot insure his business support after he leaves office by vetoing the will of the people!!

I just heard a promo for Kevin Miller's morning talk show. (he came here recently from N.C., maybe some of you know him). His words were "we are locked and loaded."! The Mayor is going to get a earful tomorrow. He's already getting it on the Phil Valentine show!!

These Politicians spoke to us Americans in English.
We took a vote in English.
That ballot was written in English.
Those polititions read in English.
Our Constitution is in English.
They write our laws, IN ENGLISH!

EVERYTHING about America is IN ENGLISH!
