Tracy resolution on illegal immigration passes

Murfreesboro, TN - A resolution, sponsored by Senator Jim Tracy commending the state leadership of Arizona on their tough new immigration law, passed the Tennessee Senate late Friday night in the final days of the 2010 regular session of the 106th General Assembly.

The measure passed the Senate with a majority vote of 17-7.

"This new Arizona law just mirrors federal law, which already requires aliens to register and carry their documents with them," Tracy said on the floor of the Senate.

The House passed its version by a count of 67-27 last month.

The measure congratulates Arizona lawmakers and Gov. Jan Brewer for "their actions to protect their citizens and the borders of our great nation."

The Arizona law requires authorities to enforce the federal law, notifying the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) if a person is reasonably suspected of being in the country illegally.

"It's the job of our federal government to protect and secure our borders in this country," said Tracy. "That job has simply not been done and the people in Arizona have known that for a long time. So, I commend the state of Arizona for stepping up and doing what they have to do while the Obama-Pelosi administration has refused to act.

"I also commend my fellow legislators in both the Senate and the House for lending their voices on behalf of the overwhelming majority of Tennesseans. The people of this state understand the battle Arizonians have faced in the fight against both illegal immigration and the hypocritical, incompetent politicians in Washington, D.C.

"We must get back to the basics and take care of this illegal immigration fiasco immediately. It's time to show leadership on this issue and stop the double-talking, political correctness, and coddling of illegal aliens."
