Kan. indictments show ICE monitors jail logs

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - Recent indictments of suspected illegal immigrants in Kansas show federal authorities are closely monitoring local jail bookings in the state.

A grand jury returned six indictments Thursday against inmates jailed in Wichita, Great Bend, Dodge City and Garden City. The inmates are charged with illegally re-entering the U.S. after being deported.

A federal prosecutor says Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been systematically monitoring each day's bookings at all Kansas jails for foreign nationals.

Indictments for illegal re-entry are expected to rise as technology makes it easier and faster for local law enforcement officials to check identities.
