Tom Tancredo Announces Run For Presidency

Tom Tancredo Announces Run For Presidency
Congressman Says He Hopes To Rattle McCain

    UPDATED: 8:49 am MDT April 2, 2007

DENVER -- Rep. Tom Tancredo announced his candidacy for president Monday morning in Des Moines, Iowa.

Iowa will host the first presidential caucus in the country.

In January, Tancredo formed an exploratory committee. Last week he picked former CNN commentator Bay Buchanan to temporarily oversee the exploratory campaign.

Tancredo is well-known as an outspoken opponent of illegal immigration. He believes in securing the nation's southern border with Mexico and cracking down on illegal immigration.

The Colorado Republican has been flirting with a presidential bid for more than a year and began raising money for the effort in January.

He decided to make his run official after taking in more than $1 million in two months.

He concedes he is a long shot for president, but he hopes to rattle Arizona Sen. John McCain's campaign by appealing to conservatives on immigration, abortion and other issues.

McCain last year co-sponsored a bill creating a path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the country now, though he has played a smaller role in the issue this year.

Tancredo is a five-term House member.

Colo Rep Tancredo Makes Immigration Main Issue In President Bid

    Apr 2, 2007

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP)--Criticizing other Republican candidates as weak in their efforts to stop illegal immigration, Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo announced Monday he would seek his party's presidential nomination.

"The political elite in Washington have chosen to ignore this phenomenon," he said.

Tancredo, who has gained prominence in recent years for his staunch stance against illegal immigration, said immigration would be the primary focus of his campaign.

He said he would not enter the race if he thought one of the leading candidates was sufficiently conservative on the issue.

It's, "the field, the field," he said when asked why he was entering the race. "You look and you see no one is going to make this the primary issue of their campaign."

Tancredo made his announcement on a conservative Des Moines, Iowa-area radio show, opting for a live broadcast rather than a more typical staged campaign event.

Tancredo said he made the announcement in Des Moines rather than his home state of Colorado because Iowa is one the first states to hold primaries, in which delegates choose their party's nominee for the presidency.

"That's how you get there," he said. "You do well in Iowa, you do well in New Hampshire."

Tancredo said he had raised a little more than $1 million for his presidential bid.
