Immigration rally gets approval after all

LAKEWOOD — Diane Reaves will, in the end, get her rally.

After months of cancelations and roadblocks, she was told last week that the township would provide security so that a demonstration protesting illegal immigration could be held safely outdoors in a public place.

And despite all the setbacks, the date has stayed as planned: Saturday.

"Right now I'm feeling so excited, I'm on cloud nine," Reaves, a first-time rally organizer, said. "Even if five people show up, I still feel it's an accomplishment."

Ever since broaching the idea of holding the event over the summer, Reaves has received rejections from the Police Department regarding security and the American Legion post in Lakewood and the Old Bridge Elks Lodge regarding venues.

The original rally date, Aug. 25, was canceled when Reaves was told that the police would not provide security for her private event, to be held in the town square. Yet during last Thursday's meeting, Committeeman Robert Singer suggested that the security should be made available, and Police Chief Robert Lawson agreed.

"Any group that wishes to hold a rally has a right to do so, and our obligation is that, whatever protection they need, we take care of it," Singer said.

Lawson did not respond to a query asking why he changed his mind. The department will now place officers at the rally, with county and state officers also available if needed.

Expected speakers include Ruth Miller of the Fire Coalition, Gayle Kesselman of NJ Citizens for Immigration Control, Bruce DeCell of 9/11 Families for Secure Borders, Carmen Morales of You Don't Speak for Me and Kathleen Appell of Citizens for Immigration Control and Enforcement. The patriotic band Poker Face will also perform.

The Asbury Park open borders press put this article on the back page of page 2 and didn't even put the dates within the article. All they list is Saturday. They did post the venue below the article in the newprint paper. You won't find it in the article on the WEB on their site.

They need new reporting staff that know how to report IMPORTANT DETAILS like DATES OF EVENTS.

I can see their not too happy about reporting this story.

    Lakewood anti-illegal immigraton rally peaceful

LAKEWOOD — After months of planning and multiple cancelations, an anti-illegal immigration rally here finally got off the ground.

About 60 supporters turned out to the Lake Carasaljo amphitheater today to hear several speakers voice their concerns and frustrations surrounding the influx of illegal immigrants into the United States.

Featured speakers included Gayle Kesselman, co-chair of the New Jersey Citizens for Immigration Control and Carmen Morales, vice chair of "You Don't Speak For Me,'' a national organization of Hispanic-Americans opposed to illegal immigration.

Topics focused largely on the negative economic and social impacts of illegal immigrants as well as the ineffectiveness of government in dealing with the problem.

The rally, organized by township resident Diane Reaves, was originally scheduled to take place in August, but was canceled after multiple venues backed down from hosting the event and concerns arose over the security of speakers and attendees.

The security concerns were eventually answered by a large police presence at the event today. Lakewood Police Chief Robert Lawson stationed 15 armed officers in and around the amphitheater and also blocked off vehicle access to the surrounding portions of North Lake Drive as a precaution.

Members of the Ocean County Sheriff's Department were also on hand in the event that extra security would be needed, Lawson said. Reaves also arranged for private security provided by volunteers.

    No counter-protesters attended the rally.
