Woman faces 10 years in illegal immigrant case

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A woman convicted in Mississippi of harboring illegal immigrants from China, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, India and Mexico faces up to 10 years in prison when she's sentenced next week.
Sheren Nguyen was transporting nine illegal immigrants in a Chevy Suburban when it was pulled over on Interstate 55 in Pike County on Dec. 15, 2010, court records said. Nguyen, 38, told authorities she is a naturalized U.S. citizen from Vietnam. She had a Houston, Texas, driver's license and was apparently headed for Atlanta with the illegal immigrants.
Nguyen pleaded guilty in March in U.S. District Court in Jackson. Around that time, authorities used a search warrant to copy her address book, text messages, calls and videos from her cell phone, according to court records.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agent Bradley Byrd said in an affidavit that three of the illegal immigrants were male juveniles from Guatemala, Honduras and India.
The affidavit said Pike County Sheriff's Deputy John Speed made the traffic stop because the vehicle was swerving. The deputy became suspicious because the people in the car appeared nervous and Nguyen "could not remember how many people were in the vehicle or where they were going in Atlanta, Ga."
"Deputy Speed also stated that the vehicle was very dirty inside and observed several plastic bottles that he later determined contained urine," the affidavit said.
U.S. Attorney John Dowdy said in an email that Mississippi has major interstate systems and has become "a significant pipeline to the rest of the country for human traffickers coming from the Mexican border."
"Working with federal, state and local law enforcement, our office will continue to vigorously pursue and prosecute those who profit from transporting and smuggling illegal aliens," Dowdy said.
Nguyen has been jailed since her arrest. Magistrate Judge Keith Ball said in January that she was a flight risk with at least five felony convictions, including forgery and unauthorized use of a vehicle. Ball's detention order also said Nguyen had been questioned in September 2009 when she tried to pick up three illegal immigrants from China when they arrived in Houston from Harlingen, Texas.
In addition to the prison sentence, Nguyen faces up to a $250,000 fine when she's sentenced July 12.
ICE spokesman Temple Black said the illegal immigrants were turned over to ICE's Enforcement Removal Operations the day of the arrest to be processed for deportation. One of them was prosecuted for illegal re-entry and given timed served.
