Traffic stop leads to arrest of illegal alien

    September 19, 2012
    Union-Sun Journal

A routine traffic stop in Newfane led to the arrest of a man from Mexico who had apparently entered the country illegally.

Niagara County Sheriffs deputies stopped a car Saturday afternoon on Ridge Road for speeding. While speaking with the driver, a Gasport woman, a deputy noticed that her passenger was acting “very suspicious.”

According to the report, the passenger “would not look at patrol, his hands were shaking and he was breathing rapidly.”

The deputy attempted to question the passenger to confirm the driver’s story of where they were coming from and going. However, the passenger ignored the deputy and continued to look straight forward in the vehicle. The woman said that her passenger does not speak English.

She then translated for the man and he produced a mexican identification card bearing the name Pablo E. Martinez.

Border Patrol was notified and and took Martinez into custody for being in the country illegally.

The driver was ticketed for speeding.
