Train found with suspected undocumented immigrants aboard

(Gee, I wonder if the same thing will happen on Mexican Trucks?)

Seventh Street was shut down for nearly two hours Friday morning between Jefferson Street and Grant Street after a group of suspected undocumented immigrants were found locked in a rail car on a stopped Union Pacific train.

At 9:07 a.m., a train conductor heard a person yelling and saw a hand sticking out from the top of the train. He could not get the door opened and notified authorities.

When authorities arrived, they found a 20-year-old man and 22-year-old female. They were both were transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

Both people are said to have suffered from severe dehydration.

The woman told authorities that they had been traveling on the train for eight days and that at least four other people were traveling with them. However, authorities searched 70 rail cars and were unable to find any other passengers.

The train was coming from Mexico was carrying new Dodge trucks inside rail cars. The final destination was Phoenix.

They had gotten inside the rail car by propping open a door, but it locked behind them after they entered, authorities said.

Mike Sandulak, a public information officer with Phoenix fire, said the trucks had keys in each car, which allowed the stowaways to turn on the trucks for air conditioning.
