ICE arrests 10 in Danbury
DANBURY
Federal immigration authorities arrested 10 people on warrants in Danbury this morning in what appears to be a continuation of the federal raids against illegal immigrants.
"We've been hearing about a number of arrests," said Wilson Hernandez, vice president of the Ecuadorian Cultural Center in Danbury.
Hernandez said he has heard recent reports of people who committed misdemeanor crimes being deported.
"Nobody is trying to justify their crimes, but it seems like excessive punishment," he said.
Danbury Police Capt. Robert Myles said the federal authorities with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had federal paperwork similar to arrest warrants, and the officials were looking for specific people.
"Danbury officers were not involved in the arrests. We were standing by," Myles said. He said the people who were arrested were not taken to Danbury Police Headquarters. They were driven to Hartford, he said.
