    Well, of course you can. Illegals do it al the time - although most of them can speak some and understand a lot more than they allow you to think.

    Just say some provocative in English sometimes and watch their faces.

    Without looking just tell them their fly is open, if they look you know they speak english.

    They act like they don't know English when they are purchasing something at a yard sale. Anything dealing with money and their English abilities don't work as well. Not all of them, but I have experienced several who pretend they don't understand.

    Maybe the BBC should do a story in Britain to see if someone can cross the UK with speaking only Hindi, Urdu, Arabic or some other immigrant language.
