    Editorial: Doing the illegal shuffle
    October 25, 2006

Hard-working as they may be, law-abiding illegal aliens are a contradiction in terms. They have broken the law simply by being here.

The oxymoron takes on absurd — and dangerous — dimensions when illegal aliens shuffle in and out of police custody with no action from immigration authorities.

Take Cires Gomes, for example. The once-deported 20-year-old Brazilian was arrested on drug-possession charges in St. Lucie County in June 2005. Though in this country illegally for at least the second time, he was allowed to walk (with his "valid" Florida driver's license) and, a year later, he was arrested again and charged in a recent string of armed robberies in Indian River County.

He also stands charged in the attempted slaying of an accomplice.

Law enforcement's failure to nail down immigration status was well documented in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Five of the 19 hijackers were illegal aliens and, amazingly, four of the five men had been stopped by officers for speeding. All could have been arrested for civil violations if the officers had verified that the terrorists in waiting had overstayed their visas.

Unfortunately, communication among local, state and federal authorities remains as porous as the border. Local police can arrest and detain illegals on any number of charges, but the feds don't consistently get involved.

"An illegal alien who has merely been arrested 14 times for robbery, say, without a conviction will draw only a yawn from an Immigration and Customs Enforcement director," says Heather MacDonald, a Manhattan Institute fellow and author of "The Illegal-Alien Crime Wave."

Law-enforcement agencies here and elsewhere appear uneasy or unable to discuss the subject. Officials in Martin and Indian River counties could not say last week how many illegal aliens were in their jails. They could only report that 161 "foreign-born" inmates were in custody.

St. Lucie County did provide a breakdown: Of its 55 foreign-born inmates, 50 were illegals, officials said. But with the prevalence of false IDs and federal authorities' reluctance (or inability) track every case, hard numbers can be hard to come by.

"A lot (of illegals) come through and we never know. There is no absolute way to track them," acknowledges Martin County Sheriff's Major Steve Chase.

Adds MacDonald: "It is a measure of how topsy-turvy the immigration environment has become that to ask police officials about the illegal crime problem feels like a gross social faux pas, something simply not done in polite company."

So, few reporters ask and officials don't (or can't) tell — and the revolving door just keeps spinning.

    RAP SHEETS

In addition to the Cires Gomes case, several high-profile criminal investigations on the Treasure Coast this year involve illegal aliens. Here are a few:

    • Marvin Omar Hernandez, 25, is wanted in the stabbing death of another illegal immigrant in Gifford.

    • Alberto Cerna Monroy, 24, was convicted of killing Raul Perez in Vero Beach. Officials say Monroy will be deported after he serves a three-year sentence, a short term that prosecutors agreed to for lack of witnesses.

    • Heinan Cortez, 32, has been charged in the stabbing death of an unidentified man in Fellsmere.

    • Junio Trenta, 31, was charged with having intercourse with a dog in the woods in Martin County. Trenta previously spent 28 days in the Orange County jail, but was not deported.

I live in Port St. Lucie. Our sheriffs office has an immigrant liason on staff at their office. This should tell you where they stand. Florida is hopeless.

Not all areas in Florida are hopeless. Miami Dade Police caught a possible illegal last night who committed a crime. ICE was notified by the arresting officer. In fact there was an illegal mouthy kid from Guatamala who was caught shoplifting at Wal Mart and both the kid and parents were deported. This is probably why immigration advocates what to make Miami a sanctuary city.
As for Port St. Lucie, they have a very interesting homicide case. A family of Mexicans escaped their own people's invasion in Brownsville, Texas and moved to Florida. They were gunned down execution style and left by the side of the Turnpike and their vehicle was taken. I think the vehicle was found the next day. The man's brother who was a known drug dealer was questioned and released.

How totally disgusting. I think that if he would sexually molest a dog, he would probably go after anything/anyone that he felt he could control.

Someone needs to tell this pervert that gators are really sexy.

At least they have a law against having sex with a dog. Not all states do. As for going for anything he can control, chances are goo that he won't rape women. This is an individual who cannot or has difficulty in having relationships with women.

If you did not see the original story he was doing the deed right on the side of a busy highway and when the officers came to get him that caught him in the act and he looked at them and said what is the problem, it's my dog.
