Trenton Considers ID Card to Include Illegal Aliens
Activists propose city-issued photo IDs
BY ANDREW KITCHENMAN
Wednesday, November 12, 2008
TRENTON -- City activists are raising a proposal to provide official photo identification to groups who otherwise don't have IDs, including illegal or undocumented immigrants.
While Latino leaders who are discussing the proposal said it is too early to say whether it will move forward, they plan to meet with police director Irving Bradley Jr. to seek his support.
Similar measures in San Francisco and New Haven, Conn., have faced legal challenges from opponents of illegal immigration and a national organization weighed in yesterday against the measure moving forward in Trenton.
But supporters see the ID proposal as extending beyond immigrants.
Maria Juega of the Princeton-based Latin American Legal Defense and Education Fund said the proposal would seek to provide IDs for anyone who doesn't have a driver's license, including the elderly, those who have had their licenses suspended and immigrants who don't have local IDs.
"We're looking with this (proposal) to integrate those who are at the margins," Juega said.
The IDs would be used to conduct local business, such as applying for library cards, and could be accepted by local businesses, such as banks to open accounts, Juega said.
Perhaps most importantly, police-recognized IDs would ensure that police know whether victims of crimes or accidents live in the city, she said.
She declined to discuss the proposal in detail, saying that it wasn't appropriate until it is known whether Bradley supports the idea. Police spokesman Pedro Medina couldn't be reached for comment yesterday.
Trenton activist Juan Martinez expressed support for the proposal yesterday, saying it could serve as a stepping stone for broader immigration reform.
By having IDs that are recognized by local authorities, immigrants would no longer spend large amounts of money for bogus IDs that police won't accept, Martinez said.
"It's our hope that we can get this going in the city of Trenton because it's greatly needed," Martinez said.
City Councilman-at-large Manuel Segura said he supports the idea of all residents having a form of valid identification, but he expressed doubt about whether local governments can issue IDs.
Segura, a member of Gov. Jon Corzine's advisory panel on immigration policy, said the state government is exploring how to address issues ranging from undocumented immigrants' drivers' licenses to immigrants' ability to receive in-state tuition.
While Segura said he supports local immigration-reform efforts, he said major changes must come from the state and federal governments.
The ID proposal drew criticism from the Federation for American Immigration Reform, a Washington, D.C.,-based group that supports reductions in immigration.
FAIR spokesman Bob Dane noted that his group's legal affiliate sued San Francisco to block a municipal ID.
"You're enticing thousands of illegals to move in" and drain scarce municipal resources, when a city endorses local IDs, Dane said.
Juega and others plan to meet with Bradley on Dec. 1.

Did Trenton secede from the Union and become a part of the New World Order or a protectorate of Mexico?

We need to form the White European American caucus and send them to DC and sit in meetings that the Asian American caucus and the Black caucus and the Indian caucus and the Arab Muslum cacus all attended to try and persuade the government to give special treatment to THEIR particular groups of people. I guess being an American isn't enough. I guess the laws are made according to what country you come from.
