Federal officers and Houston police apprehended a man at about 11:30 a.m. who had eluded officials since his escape this morning as he got off a bus at a federal detention center in north Houston, officials said.

Dogs and helicopters were called in to aid in the search for Julio Cesar Gonzalez Pena. 21, who ran handcuffed into woods near the U.S. Immigration and Enforcement facility on Greens Road, said Leticia Zamarripa, ICE spokeswoman.

Federal officials picked the man up at the Harris County Jail this morning and were moving him to the federal facility to begin deportation procedures against the El Salvador citizen, Zamarripa said. Pena ran from the bus at about 8:45 a.m., she said.

Pena was accused of assault and was identified by federal immigration officials as an illegal alien after he was booked into the county jail on the charge, Zamarripa said.

Details of Pena's alleged crime were not immediately available.
