A Tucson woman died when her car was struck by a truck carrying marijuana on the Tohono O'odham Nation, an official said Monday.
Susan Bieger's vehicle was hit from the side Friday afternoon by a Chevrolet pickup truck that ran a stop sign at Arizona 86 and Federal Route 1, about three miles outside of Why, said Detective Marty Fuentes, a spokesman for the Tohono O'odham Police Department. Why is about 120 miles west of Tucson.
Bieger, 54, was driving alone and heading for a weekend stay in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, where she and her husband own a home, Fuentes said.
The driver and two passengers of the truck all fled from the scene of the 5:45 p.m. crash, but one of the passengers didn't make it far because of serious injuries he suffered, Fuentes said.
That passenger was found near the crash and taken to a hospital in Phoenix, Fuentes said.
Police found 66 bales of marijuana that spilled from the truck. Each bale weighed about 25 pounds, he said.
The pickup was reported stolen from California, and investigators believe it was not being pursued by any other vehicles at the time of accident, Fuentes said.
Police are looking for the driver of the truck and the other passenger and ask that anyone with information call investigators at (520) 383-3275, Fuentes said.
